What should my rabbit eat?

Most rabbit health problems we see start with diet. The fix is simple, and it's mostly hay.

Hay first, always

Rabbit teeth grow all their lives, and long fibrous hay is what wears them down. It also keeps their gut moving. Good-quality meadow or Timothy hay should be available all the time.

If your rabbit isn't eating much hay, try a different brand or a mix. Some rabbits are fussy about texture.

Greens, pellets and treats

Offer a variety of leafy greens and herbs: romaine lettuce, kale, coriander, parsley, dandelion leaves and basil are all good. Introduce new greens slowly.

Pellets are a supplement, not a meal. Avoid muesli-style mixes, which let rabbits pick out the sugary bits. Carrots and fruit are treats, not staples.

Water and weight

Rabbits drink more from a bowl than a bottle. Offer both and refresh them daily.

We weigh rabbits at every visit. If you're not sure whether yours is the right shape, a nurse can show you how to check at home.
