Dental care

What it is

Most pets over three have some dental disease, and they are very good at hiding the pain it causes. A dental procedure lets us clean above and below the gumline, take X-rays to see the roots, and treat or remove teeth that are causing problems. It is done under general anaesthetic, with a nurse monitoring your pet the whole time.

When your pet needs it

  • Bad breath that does not go away
  • Red or bleeding gums, or brown build-up on the teeth
  • Chewing on one side, dropping food or pawing at the mouth
  • Rabbits and guinea pigs with drooling or a wet chin

What to expect

  1. Step 1: Morning drop-offYou bring your pet in between 8:00 and 8:30. A nurse goes through the consent form with you and answers questions.
  2. Step 2: Pre-anaesthetic checkYour vet examines your pet and, for older pets, runs a quick blood test to make sure anaesthesia is safe.
  3. Step 3: The procedureUnder anaesthetic we take dental X-rays, clean and polish every tooth, and treat any problem teeth. We call you before removing any teeth that were not planned.
  4. Step 4: Waking up and homeA nurse stays with your pet as they wake up. Most pets go home the same afternoon with pain relief and a soft-food plan.

How to prepare

  • No food after 10pm the night before. Water is fine until morning.
  • Rabbits and guinea pigs should not be starved. Bring their usual food.

Questions

For most older pets, yes. We run a blood test first and adjust the anaesthetic to suit them.

Most eat the same evening. We send you home with soft food and simple instructions.

Daily brushing helps a lot, but it cannot remove hardened tartar or treat problems below the gum.
